Web Workshop I

The goal of this workshop is to have attendees build a three-page website containing basic contact and class information.  Click here to see what the completed websites will look like--minus the colored table borders.  Web Workshop II will build upon what we learn here.

Server, Name, and Content

As described on the "Getting Started" page, there are three things needed for every website--a server, a web address, and website content.   The HSU SIFE team has provided attendees with two of these things--a server account and a web address.

  • Attendees will be given disk space on the server used to host this site.  The server account is hosted by Winsave.com and costs $8.95 per month.  Winsave.com server accounts include Microsoft FrontPage server extensions (meaning that the server is compatible with FrontPage and supports the special features of FrontPage).
  • Your website will reside in a subweb of the HSUSIFE.COM website.  Your domain name is http://www.hsusife.com/xx, where xx are your first and last initials.
  • The rest of today's session will be spent creating the webpages and adding content

Rules for filenames

  • All of our files must end with a .htm or .html file extension.  Let's only use .htm.  When you save your files in FrontPage, make sure to include .htm in the name (FrontPage may do it for you by default, but it is better to get in the habit of checking)
  • When you type in a web address (e.g., www.hsutx.edu), the browser software will look for a file named index.htm as the homepage--or as the page to initially display.  Be sure to name your homepage index.htm.  FrontPage wants to name the homepage default.htm, which is okay as long as you use a server with FrontPage compatibility.  Dreamweaver and other programs don't recognize the default.htm name as the homepage.  Get in a habit of naming (or renaming in FrontPage) the homepage index.htm.
  • Each subdirectory can have an index page.
  • To pull up a page other than the index page, you would have to type in the full name of the file--including all of the directories in which it resides.   For example, the web address for this page is: http://www.hsusife.com/web/workshop1.htm.
  • If you wanted to pull up the web instruction homepage, you could type in http://www.hsusife.com/web/index.htm or just http://www.hsusife.com/web (you don't need to include the last "/index.htm" because that is what the browser is looking for--the file in that particular subdirectory named index.htm).  Actually, you don't even need to type in http://www. (the browser assumes that)--you can just type hsusife.com/web and get to the same page.

Opening Frontpage and Logging On

  1. Open Microsoft FrontPage
  2. Choose File-->Open Site or File-->Open Web or File-->Recent Webs
  3. In the file name bar type in: http://www.hsusife.com/xx (where xx are your first and last initials)
  4. A username and password box will appear.  Enter the username and password provided in the workshop
  5. You are now logged on to the server.  Any additions or changes that you make to your website will automatically be made on the server files (i.e., the changes will be made immediately).
